What happens if the pharmacy does not fill the insurance for Medicare prescription drugs?
You may have a Medicare policy that insures prescription drug insurance. However, it can happen that a pharmacy cannot fill your prescription. These are some of the reasons why pharmacies are not filling up with Medicare prescription drugs and the ways in which they exist to deal with the situation. First, consider the two ways to get your Medicare prescription drugs, either through an independent Medicare Part D prescription drug policy or a Medicare Advantage prescription drug policy. Original Medicare, Part A and B, only contains a limited number of prescription drugs and, in general, does not insure the medications you take at home.
You have left your policy’s network or service area to fill your prescription
Often, a prescription drug is not filled because the pharmacy is not in your Policy network. Many independent Medicare Part D policies for prescription drugs and Medicare Advantage drugs use a network of local pharmacies. Make sure your pharmacy is in the network. Otherwise, you may need to visit a pharmacy that is in the network or pay the full price. Depending on your policy, you may have access to a national network of participating pharmacies that are available outside of your home country. Call the customer service number on the back of your membership card or visit the policy’s website for help finding a participating pharmacy.
You have reached the maximum amount for your prescription.
Some Medicare policies with prescription drug insurance use quality measures and cost control, such as quantity limits. If your medication has imposed a maximum on your prescriptions, Medicare insures only a given amount of doses over a period of time. If you have reached a quantity limit and your policy refuses to insure your medications, you can try the following:
You or your doctor can use the policy and request an exception. The request must include a statement from your doctor that specifies a medical reason for more medications. Your pharmacist should give you an indication of how to do this and who to call. Exceptions may be made in writing, unless your policy accepts telephone inquiries. Your policy will have 24 hours for expedited request or 72 hours for a standard provision.
You may have to pay the full cost of your medications if the valid restorations remain in your prescription.
Your prescription does not appear in the formula of your policy.
All Medicare coverage for prescription drugs, whether separate Medicare Part D prescriptions drug policy or a Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug Policy, is based on a formulary. This formula is a list of approved prescription drugs that determines the insurance benefits. Your doctor may be familiar with the requirements of formulating your policy and prescribing medications that are insured. However, the shape of a policy can change at any time.
